Functions, occupations and activities
Born in East Malling, Kent (19 October 1777); educated at Eton; worked in the navy pay office, becoming second secretary to the board of control; civil secretary to Sir Edward Pellew (1804) and served with him in the East Indies (1804-1809), the North Sea (1810), and the Mediterranean (1811-1814); married a daughter of Rev Jonathan Boucher (1815) and lived in Windsor (until 1819); secretary to Greenwich Hospital (1819); civil commissioner (1824-1844); was a watercolour painter; elected FRS (1811); published "Views of Spain", illustrated by himself (1813); was instrumental in establishing a gallery of naval pictures at Greenwich (1823); retired on a special pension due to ill health (1844); died in Uxbridge (16 October 1849)
