Born in Feldberg, Austria (4 October 1758); educated at the monastery of the Merciful Brothers, Feldberg and worked under Nikolaus von Jacquin, professor botany, Vienna; travelled around Europe with Jacquin's son Joseph (1788); met Sir Joseph Banks and worked in his library; was engaged by Banks as artist for Kew Gardens, where he worked for the rest of his life as a botanical illustrator; also interested in microscopy
