Born in London (13 July 1903); art writer, broadcaster; Keeper, department of fine art, Ashmolean Museum (1931); Surveyor of the King's pictures (1934-1944); Director of National Gallery (1934-1945), from which he resigned to concentrate on writing; Chairman of the Arts council (1953-1960); first Chairman of the Independent Television Authority (1954-1957); Chancellor of University of York (1969-1979); Trustee of the British Museum. Attended Winchester College and Trinity College, Oxford (graduated 1925); married 1) (1927) Elizabeth Winifred ("Jane") (died 1976), two sons (one of whom was Alan Clark, politician) and one daughter; 2) (1977) Nolwen; KCB (1938); FBA (1949); CB (1959); life peer (1969); OM (1976); lived at 30 Portland Place, London (1934-1939) ; died in Hythe, Kent (21 May 1983)
