Studied under William Pars in London; member of the Free Society of Artists (1762); exhibited watercolours at the Royal Academy (1775, 1779); lived in Exeter where he practised as a drawing master (from 1750s); turned to landscape painting; went to Italy with John "Warwick" Smith and exhibited there and in Switzerland (1780-1781); moved to London and married Jeannette Hilligsberg, a dancer (1807); lived at 32 Devonshire Street, London ; died in Exeter (7 July 1816)
