Born 3 July 1812; devoted time to painting, but decided against it as a career and took up medicine; studied anatomy in Paris; member of the Royal College of Surgeons (15 July 1836), FRCS (1843); demonstrator of anatomy at St George's Hospital, London, and curator of the hospital's museum (c 1840), lecturer in anatomy (1845), assistant surgeon (1848), full surgeon (1861), consulting surgeon (1875); married Sarah Cowell (13 September 1849) and had one son and two daughters; president of the Pathological Society (1863); surgeon-extraordinary to the Queen (1867), serjeant surgeon-extraordinary (1877), serjeant-surgeon (1884); FRS (1874); surgeon to the Prince of Wales (from 1875); created baronet (1883); retired to Horsham and concentrated on watercolour painting; died 19 June 1891
