Painter, costume and poster designer ; born at Helensburgh, Dumabartonshire, 23 January 1881 ; son of William Reid Mainds, artist ; studied at Glasgow school of Art where he received the Haldane Travelling Scholarship, enabling him to study in Brussels under Jean Delville and then in Rome ; lecturer at Glasgow School of Art (1909-1931) and Professor of Fine Art, King's College, Durham University (from 1931) ; elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy (1929) ; member of Glasgow Art Club ; lived at Hillhead, Glasgow and later at Gosforth, Northumberland ; died 4th July 1945.
