Historical and genre painter; book illustrator; head teacher at Somerset House, London (1837-1844); director of the Glasgow School of Art (1844-1848); returned to Dublin become Headmaster of Dublin School of Art (1848-1862). Exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy and became honorary Professor of Painting. Also exhibited at the Royal Academy (1839-1841), British Institution and Old Watercolour Society.
