Born in London (16 June 1792), son of a framemaker; studied at the Royal Academy Schools (1805); became a Baptist (1811-1812); exhibited Society of Painter in Oils and Water-Colours (1813-1820); married (1817); produced portraits for aristocratic and royal patrons; moved to Redhill, Surrey (1851) and gave up portraiture in favour of landscapes; died in Redhill (20 January 1882)
