Born at the Villa Claremont, Lausanne (3 November 1846); educated by her father, living in England and Italy; studied, especially watercolours, at the South Kensington School of Art (1866-1869); studied in Florence and Rome (1869), taking up oil painting; returned to England; became a Roman Catholic (1873); began painting military subjects; exhibited at the Royal Academy (from 1874); married William Francis Butler (later Sir William) (1877) and had three sons and three daughters; lived at Bansha, County Tipperary, then at Gormanston Castle, County Meath, they home of her youngest daughter; died at Gormanston Castle (2 October 1933)
