Genre and portrait painter ; born in Devonport, Cornwall, England ; son of the painter, carver and gilder Robert Parker ; married and set up as a portrait painter in Plymouth (1814) ; moved to Newcastle (1815) ; exhibited at the Royal Academy, London (1817-1859) ; member of the Northumberland Institution for the Promotion of the Fine Arts ; co-founded the Northern Academy of Arts with T M Richardson Snr. ; specialised in paintings of smugglers (from c1826) and later became known as 'Smuggler Parker' ; lived in Sheffield (1841-1845) and was drawing master at Wesley College ; moved to London (1845) and died in poverty.
