Functions, occupations and activities
Scottish painter; born in Edinburgh; served an apprenticeship as a coach painter before studying under John Graham (1754-1817) at the Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh; formed a lasting friendship with his fellow student David Wilkie and followed him to London, where he continued his studies, possibly at the Royal Academy Schools although there is no documentation to support this; in 1805 he left England for St. Petersburg, carrying letters of introduction from a Scottish patron to the court of Tsar Alexander I; while there, he learnt Russian, spending many years touring the hinterland, Tartary, Circassia and Turkey; in 1814 he returned to Edinburgh; in 1826 he was appointed Master of the Trustees' Academy; he was elected Associate of the Royal Academy (1825) and Member of the Royal Academy (1835); spent time in the late 1820s travelling in Italy, Greece and Turkey, and in 1830 he returned to Scotland; in 1834 he visited Spain and Morocco; became President of the Royal Scottish Academy (1838-1850); in 1842 he was knighted; in 1844 he revisited Russia, where he produced several paintings for Tsar Nicholas I; exhibited at the Royal Academy (1803-1849); died in Edinburgh (23 February 1850).
