Born in Castleford, West Yorkshire (30 July 1898); student teacher at Temple Street Elementary School (1915-1916); joined the army (1917) and served in France; studied at the Leeds School of Art (1919-1921) then studied sculpture at the Royal College of Art, London; taught sculpture at the Royal College of Art (from 1924); married Irina Radetsky (1929), they had one daughter; joined Unit One (1933); lived and worked in Hampstead (1930s); moved to Much Hadham, Hertfordshire after his studio was destroyed by a bomb (1940); appointed official war artist; made many preliminary drawings for his sculptures, but also drew and produced prints as illustrations; died (31 August 1986)
