Boyce, George Price (1826-1897)

Functions, occupations and activities
English landscape painter; born in Bloomsbury, London (24 September 1826); in 1846 he was apprenticed to the firm of architects Wyatt & Brandon, where he remained for three years; in 1849 he decided to become a painter; in 1854 he visited Italy and painted views of buildings in Venice and Verona; he frequently visited France and Italy, and in 1861-62 he travelled to Egypt; around 1849 he met D. G. Rossetti and the two became close friends and frequent companions during the following 25 years; from 1863 he lived in the rooms in Chatham Place, Blackfriars, London, that Rossetti vacated after the death of his wife; in 1870 a house in Chelsea he had commissioned finished and he lived there until the end of his life; exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy (1853-61); in 1858 he was a founder-member of the Hogarth Club; in 1864 he was elected an Associate of the Old Water-Colour Society, where he exhibited most summers until 1890 and often showed sketches in the winter exhibitions; he had to wait until 1878 to become a full member of the Society; died in Chelsea, London (9 February 1897).
