Born at Capel Issac, Carmarthenshire (5 October 1896); read English literature at Manchester University; married Gertrude Rosenblum (1919), they had no children; literature tutor in the Extra-mural department of the University of London (1928); involved in Penguin Books; wrote as a journalist, including as television critic for the "Observer" (until 1951); secretary to the British Institute of Adult Education (1934-1940); director of the Army Bureau of Current Affairs (1941-1945); CBE (1946); director of the Bureau of Current Affairs (1946-1951); Secretary General of the Arts Council (1951-1963); knighted (1955); secretary of the National Art Collection Fund (1963-1970); died at Stoke Mandeville hospital (30 March 1977)
