Born in Hitchin, Hertfordshire, of a Quaker family; educated at Hitchin and at a Quaker school in Bristol; apprenticed to a ship owner in Shoreham, Sussex; was forbidden by his religion to train as an artist, but practised as an amateur artist; married (1838) and settled in Hitchin; exhibited at the Royal Academy (1830); painted mainly landscapes, but also birds, flowers and animals; was paralysed (1865)
