Functions, occupations and activities
Born August 1749; partner in the banking firm of Elford, Tingcombe & Clerk, in Plymouth; exhibited at the Royal Academy (1774-1837); FRS and FLS (1790); MP for Plymouth (1796-1806); mayor (1797) and Recorder (1798-1833) of Plymouth; lieutenant-colonel of the South Devon militia and served with them in Ireland (1798-1799); created baronet (1800); MP for Rye (1807-1808); married 1) Mary Davies (she died 1823) and had one son and two daughters, and 2) Elizabeth, widow of Lt -Col Walrond; settled in Totnes, died there (30 November 1839) and buried in the parish church there; baronetcy became extinct after his death
