Born in Arnold, Nottinghamshire (25 October 1802), son of a drawing master and artist; lived in Calais, where his father owned a bobbin lace factory and studied with Louis Francia, watercolourist; moved to Paris to continue studying in the atelier of Baron Antoine-Jean Gros, and increased the popularity of water colour as a medium; exhibited at the Salon, Paris (1821); travelled and worked around France, also visiting London and Venice; became ill and died at the age of 26
