Functions, occupations and activities
Born in Liverpool (19 July 1830), both of his parents were Quakers; educated at Grove House school, Tottenham; wanted to become a painter, but was articled to an architect in Manchester; set up his own practice in Manchester (1853); won the commissions for the Manchester assize courts (1859) Manchester town hall (opened 1877) and several other buildings in the city; married Elizabeth Hodgkin, whose brother was the historian Thomas Hodgkin (1860); Fellow (1861), member of Coucil, and President (1888-1891) of the Royal Institute of British Architects ; moved to London (1865) and was commissioned to build the new Natural History Museum at South Kensington (1868, completed 1880) and also St Paul's School, West Kensington; lived at 8 and later 20, New Cavendish Street, London ; exhibited in the watercolour room of the Royal Academy; elected ARA (1878) and RA (1885); Treasurer of the Royal Academy (1898) and of the Artists' General Benevolent Institution (until 1901); retired to Yattendon, due to ill health (1901)
