Born in Thames Street, London (23 October 1769); worked for John Raphael Smith, then apprenticed to his own brother, William Ward, as an engraver and mezzotinter; also studied painting; exhibited (from 1790); appointed painter and mezzotinter to the Prince of Wales (1794); elected ARA (1807) and RA (1811); moved to Cheshunt (1830); died in Cheshunt (23 November 1859)
