Born in Halifax (22 October 1879); studied applied design at Manchester School of Art, then studied at the Slade School of Fine Art, London; was sent to Pont Aven, Brittany, for his health (1908), where he developed his artistic abilities; exhibited in Paris (1911 and 1912); married Gwendolen Salmond (1912); returned to London (1914); served in the Artists' Rifles and the Labour Corps (1916-1919); moved to Cornwall and had a studio in Paris, then in Provence; was evacuated from France by the RAF (1940); CBE (1949); knighted (1954); died in London (29 September 1959)
