Born at Gawcott, Buckinghamshire; articled to James Edmeston, article, because of his love of sketching buildings (until 1831); worked for Grissell & Peto (for 2 years), then in the office of Henry Roberts (1832-1834); worked in partnership with W B Moffat (1834-1845); received training from Sir Robert Smirke; married Caroline Oldrid, his second cousin (5 June 1838) and had five sons, including George Gilbert and John Oldrid; began his independent work by building for poor law unions and began taking up ecclesiastical commissions; restoring architect to Ely cathedral (1847); architect to Westminster Abbey (1849); elected ARA (1855) and RA (1861); built the Albert Memorial (1864) and St Pancras Station and hotel; Professor of architecture at the Royal Academy (from 1868); knighted (1872); President of the Royal Institute of British Architects (1873-1876); died of a heart attack at Courtfield House, South Kensington (27 March 1878); buried in Westminster Abbey (6 April 1878)
