Functions, occupations and activities
English writer, art historian and critic; born in Lancaster (10 August 1869); studied Classics at Trinity College, Oxford; from 1893 he worked at the British Museum, London, first in the Department of Printed Books and later in the Department of Prints and Drawings; throughout his life he worked as both a poet and art historian; at the turn of the century he was part of a group of intellectuals and artists who met at the Wiener Café in New Oxford Street; Binyon produced major scholarly catalogues for the British Museum, as well as popular books on Botticelli and on Dutch and British art; his work on William Blake and his followers was particularly extensive; by ca. 1910 he had developed a special interest in Chinese and Japanese art and in 1913 was put in charge of the new Department of Oriental Prints and Drawings at the British Museum; died in Reading (10 March 1943).
