Maine painter, watercolourist and teacher ; born in Edinburgh ; studied under Alexander Nasmyth ; visited Paris and Rome (1801) ; appointred teacher of drawings at the Royal Military College, Sandhurst (1808) ; teacher at Royal Naval College, Portsmouth ; teacher at East India College, Addiscombe ; exhibited at the Royal Academy (1805-1872), British Institution, Royal Society of British Artists and Old Watercolour Society, London ; appointed Marine Painter in Ordinary to Queen Victoria ; his studio sale was held at Christie's, 26 February 1875
