Portrait and genre painter ; born in Athlone, Ireland ; entered the Royal Dublin Society's Schools at the age of fourteen and studied there for five years ; became an Associate of the Royal Hibernian Academy (1823) and full member (1824) ; worked as a studio assistant to Thomas Lawrence in London (beginning 1829) ; travelled in Italy for three years (beginning 1831) ; returned to London, and then travelled twice to America ; lived in Dublin, Rome, Belfast and Leamington ; died in Rome (13 September 1868).
