Born at Plympton Earl's, Devon (16 July 1723); apprenticed to Thomas Hudson, portrait painter (1740-1743); sailed to Lisbon with Commodore Keppel and painted portraits of the officers at Port Mahon (1749) and travelled further in Europe; went to London and set up as a portrait painter (1752); knighted (1769); died at his home in Leicester Fields, London (23 February 1792); buried in the crypt of St Paul's cathedral (3 March 1792)
