Reinagle, Ramsay Richard (1775-1862)

Functions, occupations and activities
Portrait, landscape and sporting painter ; born 19 March 1775 ; trained under his father, Philip Reinagle, and exhibited at the Royal Academy, London (1788 onwards) ; travelled to Italy and Holland (1790s) ; returned to London and worked for a period with the panorama painter Robert Barker, before going into partnership with Barker's eldest son, Thomas Edward Barker ; became an Associate of the RA (1814) and Royal Academician (1823) ; also exhibited at the Society of Painters in Watercolours, London, and was President of the Society (1808-1812) ; was often employed by picture dealers to undertake restoration work ; was forced to resign as a Royal Academician (1848) when it was discovered that a work he had exhibited as his own was actually by J W Yarnold, but had been altered slightly by Reinagle ; continued nevertheless to exhibit at the RA (until 1857) ; died in London (17 November 1862)
