Pugin, Augustus Welby Northmore (1812-1852)

Functions, occupations and activities
Born at 34 Store Street, Bedford Square, London (1 March 1812), son of Augustus Charles Pugin; educated at Christ's Hospital, then trained as an architect and draughtsman with his father; designed furniture for Windsor Castle (1827); produced scenery for a ballet of "Kenilworth" at Drury Lane (1831); married 1) Ann Garnett (1831), she died in childbirth (1832); imprisoned for debt; after his release, opened a workshop for architectural details in Hart Street, Covent Garden, which paid his debts, but then was abandoned; lived in Salisbury and Chelsea before settling in Ramsgate where hisaunt, Selina Welby (who made him her heir), lived (1841); married 2) Louisa Burton (she died 1844), their son was Edward Welby Pugin; was received into the Roman Catholic church; set up in architectural practice; one of his patrons was the Earl of Shrewsbury; provided Sir Charles Barry with drawings for architectural details for the new Houses of Parliament; went on sketching tours to France, the Netherlands and Italy (when young and again in 1847); married 3) a daughter of Thomas Knill (1849) and had eight children; commissioner for fine arts for the Great Exhibition (1851); was admitted to a private asylum (1852) and then to Bedlam; died at his home in Ramsgate (14 September 1852)
