Historical and genre painter ; born in Edinburgh, Scotland (17 March 1839) ; entered the schools of the Trustees' Academy, Edinburgh (1855) and studied under Robert Scott Lauder ; began exhibiting at the Royal Scottish Academy (1858) ; moved to London (1862) ; shared a studio in Fitzroy Square with William Quiller Orchardson and Thomas Graham (from 1863) ; married Elizabeth Ann Bossom (1865) ; elected an Associate of the Royal Academy (1866) and Academician (1873) ; eventually moved to St. John's Wood, London ; died in Hastings, East Sussex (21 February 1893) ; his personal art collection was sold at Christie's (27 May 1893), following his studio sale there the previous day.
