Functions, occupations and activities
Architect ; baptized in Andover, Hants, England (9 Oct 1717) ; probably the son of John Pain, a carpenter ; began his studies under a Mr. Thomas Jersey and later attended St. Martin's Lane Academy, London ; became acquainted with the architect Isaac Ware, and appears to have begun his career through contact with Ware's patron, Richard Boyle, 3rd Earl of Burlington and 4th Earl of Cork ; visited Italy (1755-1756) ; member of the Society of Artists of Great Britain, and President (1770-1772) ; held various posts in the Office of Works, London, becoming Architect of the Works (1780) ; served as Justice of the Peace for Middlesex and Surrey ; served as High Sheriff of Surrey (1785) ; retired to France a few months before his death (autumn 1789) ; his son, James Paine (1745-1829) pursued a career as an architect, painter and sculptor.
