Functions, occupations and activities
Born 5 or 6 April 1781, second son of Robert Mylne; assisted his father in laying out Eau Brink Cut (by 1797); assistant engineer (1804), later with sole responsibility (1811) to the New River Company; worked on the Colchester water works (1810); surveyor to the Stationers Company (1811); surveyed the river Thames (1811 and 1813); surveyed Portsmouth harbour for the Admiralty (1813); worked in Paris and the surrounding area (1816); Fellow of the Astronomical Society (1821); designed water works for Lichfield (1821) and Stamford (1836); Fellow of the Royal Society (1826); Fellow of the Institute of British Architects (1834); worked in the fens on drainage schemes, and designed Garrard's Hostel bridge in Cambridge (1837); member of the Institute of Civil Engineers (1842); treasurer of the Smeatonian Society of Civil Engineers; married Mary Smith and had three sons and three daughters; retired 1861; died at Great Amwell (25 December 1863)
