Designer and craftworker ; born in Bexleyheath, Kent, 25th March, 1862 ; daughter of designer and writer William Morris and his wife Jane Burden ; trained at the South Kensington School of Design, London (1880-1883) ; subsequently joined father's firm of Morris & Co. ; appointed Head of Embroidery Department (1885) ; left the firm after her father's death in 1896 ; married Henry Halliday Sparling (1890) ; moved to Hammersmith, London ; separated (1894) and divorced (1899) ; taught embroidery both privately and at the Central School of Arts and Crafts, London (Director of Embroidery 1899-1904 and visting lecturer 1905-1910) ; also was visiting lecturer at Birmingham and Leicester Schools of Art and Design ; gave lecture tour in USA (1909-1910) ; contributed extensively to Arts and Crafts literature on embroidery practice and history ; involved in formation of Socialist League (1884-1885) ; Member (1899) and Committee Member (1905) of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings ; founder of Women's Guild of Arts (1907) and served as President until her death ; retired to Kelmscott Manor, Oxfordshire ; died 16th October, 1938.
