Functions, occupations and activities
Born in Southampton (8 June 1829); grew up in Jersey and Brittany; studied with a drawing master on Jersey, then went to London (1838); studied at Henry Sass's academy in Bloomsbury (1838-1839), then at the Royal Academy schools (1840); exhibited at the Royal Academy (from 1846); established the Pre-Raphaelite movement, with D G Rossetti and William Holman Hunt; elected ARA (1853) and RA (1863); married Euphemia Chalmers (1855); was a prolific illustrator for books and journals; had a house built for him to designs by Philip Charles Hardwick, at Palace Gate, London and lived there for the rest of his life (from 1879); had annual holidays in Scotland, where he painted landscapes; created baronet (1885); elected president of the Royal Academy, but died before he could take up the position; died of cancer of the throat (13 August 1896); buried in St Paul's cathedral, London (20 August 1896)
