Born at Riskworth House, Wakefield (3 May 1843); educated at Tadcaster and Wakefield, and at King's College London; pupil of Sir George Gilbert Scott; set up his own practice (1869) in which his fellow pupil and friend Somers Clarke became his partner (1876); worked mostly on churches; appointed Surveyor to Westminster Abbey (1898); elected FSA; wrote articles on ecclesiastical architecture and related matters; was one of the founders of the Alcuin Club, the Henry Bradshaw Society and the St Paul's Ecclesiastical Society; member and master (1893) of the Art Workers' Guild and active in the Archaeological Institute; died at his home 27 St George's Square, London (28 October 1906); buried in the west cloister, Westminster Abbye; unmarried
