Functions, occupations and activities
Born in Belfast (20 March 1856); brought up by relatives in the north of Ireland and in Ayrshire; apprentice retoucher in a photography firm in Glasgow, whilst attending Haldane Academy (1870s); studied for one term at Heatherly's School of Art in London, then at the Academie Julian in Paris (1881); returned to Glasgow (1885); leading member of the "Glasgow Boys"; was commissioned to paint the Queen's visit to the International Exhibition in Glasgow (1888) and then painted her portrait; moved to London (1896); exhibited at the Royal Academy (1896); vice-president of the International Society (founded 1897); married Hazel Martyn Trudeau (1910); elected ARA (1911) and RA (1921); painted military camps and naval bases (from beginning of World War I) and was appointed official war artist, assigned to the Royal Navy (1917); knighted (1918); retired to Kilkenny (1939) and died there (10 January 1941)
