Functions, occupations and activities
Born in Bridge Street, Westminster (23 May 1795); educated at private schools, then articled to Middleton & Bailey, surveyors, of Lambeth (for 6 years); exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy( from two years into his articles); travelled (from 1817) in France, Italy, Greece and Turkey, latterly with Sir Charles Eastlake, then was emplyed to go to Egypt to make sketches of scenery and buildings; returned to England (1820) and lived in Ely Place, Holborn; married Sarah Rowsell (December 1822); began designing churches and other public buildings, including the Royal Institute of Fine Arts, Manchester (1824), the Travellers' Club House, Pall Mall (1829-1831) and the new Houses of Parliament (designs submitted 1835, first stone laid 1840, formally opened 1852); knighted (1852); elected FRS, ARA and RA; died of heart disease at the Elms, Clapham Common (12 May 1860)
