Born at Preston (11 November 1868); educated at St Edmunds, Canterbury, at Eton (from 1883), and at Brasenose College, Oxford (from 1887); worked as a publisher's and printer's assistant (1889-1903); began to write art criticism (1897); taught himself to draw, but later received instruction in drawing and etching; exhibited with the New English Art Club (from 1900); married his cousin, Florence Mary Hill (1903); co-editor of the "Burlington Magazine" (1903-1909); Slade Professor of Fine Art, Oxford (1904-1910); elected member of the New English Art Club (1905); Director of the National Portrait Gallery, London (1909-1916) and of the National Gallery, London (1916-1928); knighted (1921); KCVO (1928); associate (1924) and later full member (1929) of the Royal Society of Painters in Water-colours; published his autobiography 'Self and partners' (London: Constable, 1936); died in London (7 December 1936)
