Born in Plymouth (January 1786); educated at Plymouth Grammar School and Plympton Grammar School, and at the Royal Academy (1805); taught in his own school of design (1816-1823) at which Edwin Landseer was a pupil; married (October 1821) Mary Hymans, they had two sons; imprisoned for debt (1823); committed suicide in London (22 June 1846)
