Born at Blackheath, London (21 July 1817); joined firm of Dickson & Bell, estate agents (1833); left to pursue career as an artist (1835), largely self taught; exhibited at Royal Society of British Artists, British Institution, Royal Academy and Old (now Royal) Water-colour Society; chief employment was as an illustrator of books and for periodicals such as the Illustrated London News, London Journal, Reynolds's Miscellany; began painting in watercolour (1851); elected full member of Old Water-colour Society (1854) and President of the Society (1871); knighted (1872); elected RA (1876); died at his home Vanbrugh Park, Blackheath (5 October 1897); unmarried
