Quaker; apprenticed to Henry Portsmouth, doctor, of Basingstoke; set up his own medical practice in Bristol; married Portsmouth's eldest daughter, Anna, and had one son Joseph Storrs Fry; gave up medicine and first helped in a china works, then began to make chocolate; took up typefounding (1764) and went into partnership with William Pine; they took into the partnership their manager Isaac Moore, who moved the business to London under the name "Isaac Moore & Company"; also went into partnership William Fripp, in a soap-boiling business; died 29 March 1787
