Functions, occupations and activities
Born at Isleworth, Middlesex (17 May 1863); educated at Wellington College and at King's College, Cambridge (graduated 1886); articled as an architect to G F Bodley; set up his own practice, but his main work was in handicraft revival; founded the London Survey Committee; member of the Art-Worker's Guild (1897) and Master (1929); established the Guild of Handicraft (1888-1907); married Janet Elizabeth Forbes (1898) and had four daughters; continued in architectural practice; gave lecture tours in America; served with a field ambulance in the Middle East (World War I) and taught in Egypt (1918); civic advisory and secretary to the Pro-Jerusalem Society, until resigning (1922); died at Godden Green, Kent (23 May 1942)
