| GB/NNAF/P76878 Bidlake, William Henry (1861-1938) Gender: Male Functions, occupations and activities English architect; born in Wolverhampton (12 May 1861); the son of a Midlands architect, George Bidlake (1830-92); initially gained experience working in his father's office; began working in Birmingham ca. 1888; most of his work, which consists mainly of churches and houses, was done in and around that city; he designed and built nine churches, all but one of which belong to the late phase of the Gothic Revival; he was personally involved with the Arts and Crafts Movement, which flourished in Birmingham at the turn of the century; he also played an important part in the development of architectural education in Birmingham; his practise diminished after World War I, and he retired to Sussex; died in Wadhurst, East Sussex (6 April 1938).
