| GB/NNAF/P5364 Chantrey, Sir Francis Leggatt (1781-1841) Knight Gender: Male Functions, occupations and activities Born in Jordanthorpe, Derbyshire (7 April 1781); educated at the local village school, then worked for a grocer in Sheffield; apprenticed to Ramsay, a carver in Sheffield (for 7 years) and began drawing landscapes and portraits and learned stone carving and set up independently as a portrait painter (1802); studied at the Royal Academy, London (from 1802) and also exhibited there;
