| GB/NNAF/P36754 Atkinson, Robert (1883-1952) Gender: Male Functions, occupations and activities English architect; born in Wigton, Cumbria (1 August 1883); studied at University College and School of Art, Nottingham; worked in London (1864-1915); travelled to Italy and after his return (1904) he was in demand as a draughtsman and perspectivist; became Headmaster of the Architectural Association School in London (1913-20), and Director of Education (1920-29); helped to spread the Beaux-Arts style and was influential both in the development of architectural education and as an assessor for several major competitions of the 1930s, including the RIBA building in London and Norwich City Hall; died in London (26 December 1952).
