| GB/NNAF/P2616 Black, Sir Misha (1910-1977) Knight Gender: Male Functions, occupations and activities Born in Baku, Russia (16 October 1910); name changed from Moisei Tcherny (c 1911); studied art in Paris; founder member of the British Society of Industrial Artists (1933) and later President (1954-1956); joined the Industrial Design Partnership (1934); married 1) Helen Lillian Evans (1935), they had one son and one daughter, marriage dissolved (1952); co-ordinating architect to the MARS exhibition (1938); interior designer for the British pavilion at the New York Worlds Fair (1939); principal exhibition architect to the Ministry of Information (1940-1945); went into partnership with Milner Gray as the Design Research Unit (1946); OBE (1946); naturalized British (1950), when the OBE was reissued; consultant to various transport organizations; co-ordinating architect to the Festival of Britain (1951); married 2) Edna Joan Fairbrother (1955), they had one son; RDI (1957); instrumental in the founding of the International Council of Societies of Industrial Design (first met 1957) and was its president (1959-1961); Professor of Industrial Design at the Royal College of Art (1959-1975), then emeritus professor (from 1975); trustee of the British Museum (from 1968); knighted (1972); died in London (11 August 1977).
