Born in Lubeck (?8 August 1646), son of the city surveyor; studied mathematics at the University of Leyden in preparation for a military career; went to Amsterdam to study art; went to Italy, visiting Rome and Venice; went to London (after 1675) and set up as a portrait painter; hd a studio in Covent Garden (1682); naturalized citizen (1683); joint principal painter, with John Riley, to the Crown (1688), then held the position alone (1691- his death); painted the "Kit-Kat" series (c 1700- c 1720); built Whitton House (later called Kneller Hall) near Twickenham for himself (1709); was instrumental in setting up the first school for art in England, the academy in Great Queen Street (1711) and was its governor; created baronet (1715); died in London (19 October 1723)
