Born in St James', London (17 December 1792), son of Charles Hayter, miniaturist; studied at the Royal Academy schools (1808); painter of miniatures and portraits to Princess Charlotte (1815); studied in Italy (1816-1818); returned to London and practised as a portrait and history painter; settled in Italy, in Florence (1826), then in Rome (1827), then moved to Paris (1828); returned to England (1831); portrait and historical painter to Queen Victoria, principal painter-in-ordinary (1841), knighted (1842); died at St Marylebone, London (18 January 1871)
