Born in Edinburgh (21 July 1732), younger brother of Robert Adam; went into partnership with his eldest brother, John (c1750-1760); moved to London to work with his brother Robert; probably designed Portland Place; travelled in Italy and wrote on the subject of agriculture; died of apoplexy in Albemarle Street, London (20 October 1794).
