Phases 1 and 2 of the Artists’ Papers Register were compiled between 1996 and 1999 by David Tomkins (University of Leeds) and Robin Bourne (University of Birmingham) who established and developed methodology and practice, surveyed repositories in England, Scotland and Wales, and designed the database for use on the World Wide Web. Technical support was provided by Paul Snell and Jon Winterbourn (University of Birmingham) and by Peter Wojtyczka (Historical Manuscripts Commission). Phase 3 (Greater London) was compiled between 2002 and 2005 by Miranda Stead, Gudrun Richardson, Dimitrios Fragkos and Alex Chanter (Victoria & Albert Museum).

Advice on archival issues was provided by Dick Sargent and Ian Mortimer of the Historical Manuscripts Commission. Further guidance has been given by those who have chaired the Artists’ Papers Register Working Group: Rupert Shepherd, Reyahn King, Jonathan Franklin and Rowan Watson.

Our thanks go also to the staff of the repositories listed on the Artists’ Papers Register who have given generously of their time and expertise.
